The Americas Tour 2011 | PALMS, TUES and Ironlak BBQ Burners – Part 3.

The third installment of this travel diary is woefully overdue, things have been crazy busy at the House of Palms and the Ironlak HQ. Such was the allure of people, painting and the countries of South America that my tickets to return this year are already booked.  As per usual please excuse the quality of the iphone pics.

At the end of my last post myself and Big Tues-a-Palooza had hopped a plane from the Miami’s Art Basel heading overnight to Santiago, Chile where we would begin our BBQ Burners events on the South american continent.

We were scooped up at the airport by our man Jan from Daking and big Karim who puts together Dope Magazine. After a quick detour into the heart of Santiago to drop off our bags and get changed, we drove straight to the beautiful Valparaiso to meet with all the local writers and enjoy a day of BBQ Burners, taking out a HUGE spot on the underpass of a main road. I was honestly amazed no one was run over, especially me and Tues, as we kept looking the wrong direction for cars, being we drive on the other side of the road in Australia.

We had a fantastic time and were showed amazing hospitality by all, particularly the staff at DaKing, and our first taste of South America was eye opening, particularly on a graffiti level, in comparison to Australia it seems very accepted and even appreciated by the general public, particularly in Valparaiso which seems like a writers paradise, everywhere you look is covered in colour, characters and letters.

All too soon, we were back on a plane and heading over the Andes to Brazil…

Just a couple of example of the many murals adorning walls all over Santiago.

There is plenty of photos and a video from the BBQ Burners event HERE If you haven’t already seen it make sure you check it out.

Coming from a comparatively flat, dry land, flying over the Andes on our way to Brazil was an incredible experience, these photos I took through the little window are cool, but really don’t do justice to the immensity of the mountain range. It was something that be locked in my mind for the rest of my life.

Flying in over Sao Paulo was similarly amazing, the entire population of Australia equals this one Brazilian city. It seemed to go on for ever. Again this poor photo does no justice, but may give you a small insight to the feel.

I want to get back there very soon, but on this occasion our time in Brazil was to be spent in Florianopolis and Curatiba. We made our connecting flight and soon we’re flying in over the gorgeous beaches of Santa Catarina to meet with our friend Joao from Dedo Sujo, and a massive contingent of writers from all over Brasil who had travelled in to paint another epic BBQ Burners event. Plenty of photos and video to be seen HERE!

Spending a few days together in an old mansion had never been done in BBQ Burner history, much fun was had and new friends made.

Can’t visit Floripa without hitting the beautiful beaches, even with the overcast and windy day we were still blessed with  some brazillian booty floss g-string action!

Our exploits caught some positive coverage in the local rags.

Left a few of these to remember me by.

Boozey, ’bout to make the magic happen.

Around painting the wall, which had a great result, we also had an awesome time hanging out with the Brazillian writers, there was heaps of black books being shared around, along with the beers and some kind of fancy rolled up cigarettes that I wouldn’t know anything about. It hailed back to the days of being young when it was fun to exchange ideas and sketches, bang the hip hop loud, and just vibe.

There is a heap more photos of the BBQ Burners wall to be found on Dedo Sujo’s facebook.

All to soon it was over and we had to hop on a bus to make our way to our second stop in Brazil, for BBQ Burners Curatiba. I will endeavour to make one final post detailing the last few stops on the trip in a much more timely manner.

Until then… Peace. –Uncle Palmsy.
