Askew paints Cecs sketches for The Exchange.

PART ONE:
Askew said: Here’s the first piece I’ve painted from the selection of sketches people rocked last week. We were invited out of town to Tauranga to paint and not knowing what to expect, took all the different sketches printed out so I could choose the most fitting to the surface. In the end I went with one of Cecs sketches.

As you can see, it pissed down with rain the whole time and I was painting on a corrugated iron wall. This made for an extremely pleasant painting experience, especially the waterfall like stream of water gushing down the left side of the A.

I like how the piece came out although I don’t know if I nailed it exactly the way it was intended. For example, the lean on the A isn’t gangster enough, the cross of the K sits a little high and I really struggle with such bold classic arrows. I found this piece really educational. I think Cecs draws on such a catalogue of classic NYC styles, the kind that look really simple but the subtleties are what really make them actually tough to paint!

Here’s a progress video and the finished shot.

PART TWO:
This the second CECS outline from the page of sketches he did that I HAD to rock. I mainly had to do it because I could see it on the classic NZ freight, the Space Runner. I think it came out all good too!
