Welcome to SPOTLIGHT where we shine some light on burners who consistently bring fire to surfaces of all kinds. Today we feature TEAZER
Davey Mac aka ‘Teazer’ grew up in Bondi in the late 80’s. He was heavily influenced by graffiti art popping up around the area and later in books and magazines. Further inspired by skateboard art and culture, he developed his own version of New York style graffiti. His graffiti has taken him all around Australia and the world and he is well known in the industry. His journey has landed him in the beautiful surrounds of Byron Bay with his partner and fellow artist Alyssa Tennent, with whom he has created Stay Gold Studio, a fresh outlook on graffiti and street art.
Howdy TEAZER, where do you call home?
I live between Byron Bay and Sydney Australia
How did you first get into graffiti?
I watched, from the beginning, graffiti infiltrate popular culture in the mid 80’s with books by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfants (‘Subway Art’ and ‘Spraycan Art’). I was so hyped by leaving my mark in public and being seen and recognised as an individual.
How do you like to describe your style?
Classic New York/Sydney style with highly illustrative backgrounds and characters to create an environment for the letters.
What do you enjoy about graffiti?
Traveling and meeting people, it is a vehicle that can really take you places and into wierd and wonderful environments.
How often do you get out to paint?
I paint professionally as well as rocking my own personal work with friends and guests. As well as traveling as much as possible. So most weeks I’m spraying something.
Who do you like to paint with?
Secret in Byron and Atome in Sydney. They constantly inspire me and painting together flows so easy and is always a good laugh.
Who are some of your influences?
Dmote, Wane, Yes2, Bates, Can2.
What keeps you motivated?
Rocking something sick that I’m personally happy with, good times pushing the art, and getting better and supported with the art.
Is there any one you’d like to give a shout out to?
Ironlak for so solidly supporting the scene back in the days.
