SERVAL | Switzerland, 2013.

SERVAL has been busy bending letters in switzerland since 1992, 21 years on we decided to see what he’d get up to with some of the latest Ironlak. Here’s a little insight into the process behind the piece.

“I’ve been trying to vary painting styles this year, so when Ironlak decided to drop me a nice set of paint, I figured it was time to try something new. I started with a very old school palette with the pinks and light blues, and tried to jazz it up with some yellow and the bright greens in the back.

“The original theme to the piece was “Bad to the Bone” due to hearing this ridiculously cool song on the radio this summer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9bOsdHckhg I wanted to put some illustration styles in the piece, hence the bones and burning muffler incorporated to the letters. The crow kind of happened on his own, the original sketch was a Bulldog, but I was feeling gloomy so I went with a Shakesperian memento mori type crow instead. I rarely paint without metalics, and a little gold 3D always helps the colors come off stronger.

“I’m actually happy with the final outcome, because there are a lot of technical elements hidden in what comes off as a really cartoony style. The colours popped off real nice, and even though I went overboard on details and size, the final outcome works for me. Thanks Ironlak for all the paint and the ill colour selection!”
