KEMS and EWOK from the Lak Fam have been teaming up more and more recently, exploring and finding good spots to paint. In the search for the ultimate wall, they’ve been hitting the road and have spent some time in the Rust Belt – an area which expands into Upstate New York. Once defined by industry, its derelict buildings serve as symbol of economic decline and provide the perfect atmosphere for stylishly placed letters.
On reminiscing of their latest jaunt, KEMS explains; “We sort of exhausted all the abandoned factories in our area, so we’ve been moving closer to the Rust Belt. We’ve basically been going to these abandos and painting shit.”
There’s definitely a sense of discovery which comes from digging into these long-forgotten and down trodden factory buildings. It’s interesting to see what remains, the beautiful decay and the human touches that have been added long after the factory workers have left the building. The worn and rusted surfaces offering these alluring textured backgrounds for a new kind of work.
“I feel like graff fits better in these environments. The setting is more appropriate than street pieces.”
