Linger ID – The Golden Express

Melbourne based writer LINGER ID had the idea to paint a whole freight car GOLD. Luckily for all of us he’s a man of action!

“Anyone that has been to Tottenham, knows how grimy the dead freights are. The dormant freight cars surrounded by industrial decay lie in overgrown grass, littered with milk crates and graffiti leftovers.

On the last visit we got to talking while we were decorating. We all agreed that it was strange how long some of these carriages have remained in the same place in such a sorry state. How neglected the area is in general, given that it is completely surrounded by live tracks and the bordering areas are reasonably well maintained. As though this little pocket of rusted metal had been forgotten by everyone but the writers. An idea came to me amongst the fumes of paint hitting metal. How cool it would look if just one freight car was made to look brand new?

I’ve always been a fan of visuals that are very straight forward. I don’t want to analyse artwork or feel the need to “get” it. Just observe, take it in and make a decision as to whether I like it or not. I felt as though I had the opportunity to produce something with a great visual impact.

This time when I made the trip to Totty I brought brought gold… A lot of Ironlak gold to be precise. After a bit of work, 38 tins and a couple of nauseated friends that forgot to bring masks I had managed to paint the entire carriage solid gold. Wheels, couplings, gauges, suspension, ladders, floors, the lot!

It was surprising how much time and paint it took to finish. The painting involved all the normal actions of a graffiti writer with a far simpler result; one of the most blinged out freight cars I’ve ever seen. I wonder what people in the passenger trains think as they glide past and see one brand spanking new gold car nestled among the decaying freight.

A big thanks to @p1xels for documenting this project in the following images. Thanks also to BAILER (@_bailer) and SIGS (@salt_machine5165) for the additional support.” -Linger ID.
