After a short trip to Abu Dhabi (see blogpost here) DOES made his way to South America, Ecuador in particular.
Here’s a breakdown of the trip by the man himself.
Four weeks on the road.
After my two week stay in a super luxurious hotel in Abu Dhabi I was scheduled for another project in the rough parts of Quito, Ecuador.
Together with Ironlak family member Mr. Wany, I flew straight from the United Arab Emirates to Equador. We were invited for the festival ‘Gods Of Paint 2’. When we arrived at Quito airport with a bit of a jet lag we pretty much drove straight to the festival, met up with heavy weight graffiti artist Cantwo and started our first wall in Quito’s southern suburb ‘Mena Dos’.
The original plan was to drive to the Ecuadorian coast after finishing our first wall, but the weather wasn’t any good so we chose to stay in Quito and paint a few more walls. While I was expecting a situation similar to what I experienced in Bogota, Colombia, a few years back – no laws, no boundaries, painting everywhere – I soon learned that the situation in Ecuador has become more controlled due to a graffiti and street art law that was put in place a few years ago.
The second wall we painted was at the Contemporary Art Center of Quito, quite a beautiful and unique place. On our last day at the Art Center there was a big red obstacle in front of the wall so security gave me a hand and removed it for me :).
In between the main murals we painted a few quick walls, did some sight-seeing, visited ‘Meta del Mundo’ and walked around the old city centre.
Our third mural was situated in ‘Valle de Los Chillos’, a small town in a valley and a few kilometers from Quito. These last few days were most special with a big local crowd welcoming us and watching our every move at the wall.
Many thanks to ‘Blooky’ for the invitation and for showing us around the city.
Mr Wany, Cantwo, Sake, Fert, Dase, Rafael and anybody I may have forgotten.
After four weeks abroad I was eager to travel back home and see my family. My patience was tested as the trip took over 40 hours, but it all ended well. Back in my studio now creating new work for an exhibition in Athens in November. Stay tuned for more info.
