7 days. 7 artists. One big empty wall in Bundaberg, Central Queensland.
In the build up to the 2012 Crush Festival in Bundaberg, Event Co-ordinator Jess Marsellos decided to initiate something special to engage the region’s younger generation. After securing support through Australia’s Regional Arts Fund, she was able to curate the ‘HitzFM: 7 artists in 7 days’ project.
Unfortunately the only type of aerosol paint retailed in Bundaberg is the kind found in hardware stores, so Ian McCallum (2LAKS) organised $1700 worth of Ironlak to be sent from Kontraband store in Toowoomba to facilitate the event.
The boys kicked off on Monday 15th of October and painted right through until Sunday 21st (nearly 7 days). They engaged the community at every opportunity, talked with schools and even threw in a few extra walls along the way.
“This project was a huge first for Bundaberg, initially met with some opposition due to the nature and style of this public art, but once the guys got started, droves of people came down to watch, talk about and engage with this huge public artwork which will be here for years to come. It’s been super successful and I reckon it’s the start of something big in our regional Queensland town.” –Jess Marsellos.
