Back in Time

As a child of the 80s I was completely enamoured with the Back to the Future trilogy. My parents didn’t have much money, so movies in my house were limited to what was on television, or the occasional weekly rental from the video store. Going to the cinemas was a non-event. I managed to tape a copy of the first BTTF movie from TV and I must’ve watched that movie over a hundred times. To this day, I’d have to say it’s my favourite movie, ever.

A Doc Brown quote which features heavily throughout the films; “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything” has always stuck in my head and (as corny as it sounds) has served as a constant reminder to follow my own path and work towards my dreams at all costs.

In the second film, where Marty visited the future, it blew my young mind and totally captured my imagination. The future looked so awesome; the flying cars, power laces, hoverboards, self-drying jackets!! Man I was so hooked. What would the future actually be like? Time goes on, as it always seems to do, and here we are at October 21 2015, the day Marty visited the future. We don’t quite have viable hoverboards yet, and no flying cars, but it’s still pretty awesome to be here, in the future.

Given that I live in Brisbane, and not Hollywood, there’s not too much nerdy-shit going on today that I can sink my teeth into, so when my buddy James told me he was going for a ride in a DeLorean today, I pestered him until he agreed to let me come along. It’s the first time I’ve been in a DeLorean, so it definitely made my day. This DeLorean was made in October 1981, which makes it 34 years old this month. Apparently it was made in the same month as the DMC from the movie, and the owner Roberto has kept it true to the original. Soo nice. Ironically, the speedometer only goes up to 85 miles per hour. There you go.

Many thanks to Roberto from Roberto’s Custom Powder for taking us for a spin and sharing your knowledge. Legend!

If you’re in Melbourne tonight you need to go to my friend and fellow BTTF-nerd Callum Preston’s exhibition ‘Bootleg to the Future’. http://callumpreston.tumblr.com/post/131307185180/this-is-happening-as-part-of-my-art-show-come

I wish I was there.
