THE AUCTION

The openings in each city will also feature an auction of remaining submissions from previous GFUS shows <http://gofonturself.com.au/shop.html>in an effort to raise funds for the Penrith Printing Museum of Sydney. <http://www.printingmuseum.org.au>

<http://gofonturself.com.au/shop.html><http://www.printingmuseum.org.au>The story of the Penrith Museum of Printing begins with Alan Connell, the founder of the museum who had a desire back in 1987 to put together a “working museum” of printing machinery and equipment. As the story goes, many years had to pass before Alan’s dream was able to be fully realised. The Penrith Museum of Printing was officially opened on the 2 June 2001, by Ms Jackie Kelly, M.P. for Lindsay, the then Minister for Sport and Tourism. A large proportion of the machinery and equipment on display originally started its working life in the Nepean Times Newspaper in Penrith, NSW Australia. The Nepean Times proprietors Roger and Pat Colless gave several items of the printing equipment to Alan Connell for his purposes and so commenced the museum. From its earliest beginnings, the museum has continued to develop and expand its collection by relying on donations, gifts and community goodwill for its survival. ________________________________________

GO FONT UR SELF*

<http://gofonturself.com.au>Typography is at the centre of our everyday lived experience. It gives us a voice to express ideas, tell stories or articulate meaning. Outside the bounds of traditional typesetting, and beyond the scope of familiar media, letters can become the source of experimentation, taking on a personality of their own. The restraints of legibility are loosened to the whim of illustrated characters, deconstructed forms or references to the vernacular. GO FONT UR SELF* embraces letterforms as the inspiration for these works of art from international artists, designers and typographers. Whether it’s in the sweeping strokes and swashes or pixelated punctuation; the alphabet becomes the source for exploring lyrical modes of visual expression. The GFUS* Typography Initiative is an ongoing showcase of typographic works presented by Kirin and produced by Peer Group Media.
