Welcome to SPOTLIGHT where we shine some light on artists who consistently bring fire to surfaces of all kinds. Today we feature EDWIN OCREOS
Where are you based and what is the graffiti scene like where you are?
I live in Brussels, Belgium. The Belgian graffiti scene is not the most consistent but there are many different styles that stand out.
How do you like to describe your style?
My studies in graphics and typography started from the first paintings I made on the wall during my childhood. This played a vital role in achieving the style I currently work in. I would define my style as a mix between typography and lettering with some wildstyle or freestyle graffiti inspirations.
What do you enjoy about graffiti?
I really enjoy working with the spray paint. It is a medium that I love. The way of working is very different to pencil. There are so many more physical aspects when working with spray paint. The potential that my work can reach is also something that I appreciate. To observe a great typographic realization, has a strong impact for me. Looking for different materials from a wall is also something that I find exciting.
How often do you paint?
Having a full-time job as a graphic designer, I often reserve my weekend to paint. I often go to paint on a whim even if I like to prepare my achievements in advance.
Who do you like to paint with?
Generally, I like to paint alone because it allows me to focus on my achievements and provide a better job. But I also like collaborating with my friend Mache. Our universes align quite well and it is always an excellent moment of sharing. I also enjoy taking part in graffiti events because it makes it possible to meet new people with different visions. It is a medium where you can learn from each other.
Who are some of your influences?
In general, I’m influenced by artists who are in the field of graphics design, typography and hand lettering. If I had to name a few artists it would be Gary Stranger, Mateusz Witczak, Kkade Schwarzmaler, Tyrsa and many others!
What keeps you motivated?
Graffiti is a passion, an outlet and a sport! When I come across great paintings of letters, it brings me great joy. I am in my world. Reflecting on colors, lines, shapes, etc. I always try to give the best of myself when I paint. To learn each achievement in order to improve myself. I can’t see myself living without graffiti.
Do you have any graffiti stories?
I started graffiti quite young and during one of my first graffiti pieces, I nearly died. I started in graffiti doing a lot of train tracks. One day with friends we were doing a train and when the painting was over, we were so excited that we didn’t see that there was a train heading towards us. He didn’t try to honk or make noise. I had to throw myself into bushes at the last moment.
Is there anyone you’d like to give a shout out to?
To my friend Mache with whom we have already done some cool paintings. In Eyes-B with his unique style that work hard for Belgian graffiti. On the Belgian and Brussels scene which, despite its small size, is home to a good number of good, talented painters!
