Last month I had the pleasure of visiting Melbourne to attend the official launch of FUTURA’s ‘Very Special Limited Edition’ bottle with Hennessy.
I’ve been a fan of FUTURA since I first discovered Subway Art in my mid-teens. The fold-out spread of his abstract whole car was instantly appealing and this initial feeling was reinforced each time I encountered his work for years to follow. So naturally the combination of Futura and every rapper’s favourite drop was a pretty damn good excuse to hop a flight and get my arse to Melbourne.
After being collected from the airport by our main man Vinny Tang from Acclaim magazine, our first stop was a street art tour in Collingwood. This was a media trip, so I guess they had to clue in the mainstream media about “street art”.
Originally I was gonna skip the tour and head to the pub, but I decided it would be interesting to see how the culture was perceived from the outside looking in. Before too long we were wandering around with Futura and his daughter Tabatha, while our tour guide Dean Sunshine broke down his understanding of the art we were looking at. The tour was pretty focussed on the street art side of things, plenty of nice work by Adnate and the Everfresh guys… I did find myself getting distracted and splitting from the group to shoot Jetz and Peazr tags (so fresh!) and some of the other graffiti bullshit.
After the tour we were treated to the most incredible lunch and some of the good drop put on by Hennessy. They had this cocktail which was the Henny version of a ‘Side Car’. I highly recommend that shit. Delicious.
Anyway, the day couldn’t end before the main event – the official launch party featuring a live paint by FUTURA and plenty (I mean plenty!) of Hennessy flowing. I’m known to love a drink and this night was no exception, after a while shit got a little loose so I might just cut my story there. Let’s just say my hotel didn’t look the same in the morning and I took FOREVER to do anything. Ask Numskull about it. Okay, maybe don’t… -Dymskov.
Oh look, here’s some photos…
Thanks Diamond Dozen, Acclaim fam and Hennessy for knowing how to do it right.
