All my friends are getting married. Okay, well, maybe not all my friends are getting married, but last November certainly saw my good friend (and Ironlak Bossman) 'The Fat Controller' tie the knot here in Brisbane. Naturally, such an event brought a bunch of us together from around Australia, with some peeps even returning home/ making the voyage from overseas for the occasion. No better way to celebrate than to rock a quick 'Ironlak Family, staff and friends' wall the day before the wedding. With the organisation of the big day still at hand, the groom-to-be had to miss out on painting - so we got busy in his honour. I had a lot of fun painting my piece and was stoked to see everyone come to the table with some really tidy work. Special mention goes to our boy JUB who finished up working at Ironlak on the same day. He's sorely missed in the office and we wish him well wherever life takes him. The wedding itself was a really amazing day of good friends and good times. We even cracked open a bottle of Dom Pezza that the boys had been saving since Realsy 'aqquired' it during an Ironlak Family painting trip about five years ago. Pity the rough treatment meant the chaamps was off - it's the thought that counts tho, right? So here's the wall, along with some photographs I took. "Big SIRUM swung through Briso on his big bright vine recently, leaving a trail of funky colours and outstanding line work. After finishing his piece from the Wedding Jam we headed for the local to wait for the sun to calm down. Three schooies later and it was hard to do just about anything. We made it back to the wall and belted out a two namer. We arrived just in time to say hi to the local law representatives, who were frantically searching for us for about half an hour. Next time we will actually hide and see how long it takes, will be good training for them when it comes time to track some crims. "The latest batch of LE cans had just arrived, so we used as many on this wall as we could. STORM's Purple Reign is super nice to outline with (make sure you give it a good shake to get the colour mixed properly.) BERST's Tito and JURNE's Micah performed well also. This weekend it's that time of the year again, time to get together with friends and family, knock the top off a stubby and have a BBQ. Whether it's heading to the beach for a bit of splash or getting your drink on to the Hottest 100 countdown, The 26th of January has become a time to celebrate what being an Australian means to you. At Ironlak we believe that it is a privilege of being Australian to be able to link up with some mates and rock a production with a beer and a burning snag within an arms reach. And that's exactly what we'll be doing! If you're jamming over the Australia Day weekend we'd like to invite you to share your efforts with us; sending the meaning of Australia Day to writers across the globe. THE FAT CONTROLLER | ‘China Trip’ - September, 2012.

Here's the most recent update from Ironlak’s Founder and Company Director recapping his September trip to China. This post was written in October. Palms and I landed in Hong Kong and took the bus across to where the Little General picks us up on the mainland. Soon after, we went for a short meeting with a supplier about some of our markers to try to get better quality components moving forward. (Watch this space – big things are planned.) On the second or third day we had a bit of free time, so Palmsy and I went for some quick chromies on bare brick to make sure we’re still the benchmark for coverage. Of course the paint came up trumps. Afterwards we went out to dinner with some officials from the safety bureau and ended up skulling red wine. I woke up feeling fine all things considered but after about an hour I was feeling a little worse for wear. Not terrible, but certainly not firing on all cylinders either. Thankfully a cold morning shower sorted me out. Friday night we went to a different city to meet with an old friend of ours. We didn’t get into town until about 11:30pm, so we went to a small street restaurant, had dinner, a few beers then proceeded to play dice. I don’t know the name of the game but it’s a bit like poker, and when you lose you drink. It’s like that old NBA slogan "I love this game"; you’re either killing or being killed. Anyone with a remotely competitive bone in their body will love the game, plus you get to make other people drunk, which is a good laugh! At this point Palmsy headed home and Tues joined me at the factory. Because I’m getting married in about a month (that’s my heart), it was my last trip to China for a while, so we had a pretty long list of tasks to get through in terms of product tweaks and minor changes etc. Midway through my trip (about a week in) the frustration started to set in. Usually things go fairly well, but at the moment all of our key technical staff are so stretched that it’s a little difficult to free them up enough to get certain non-production tasks done. With time evaporating I was getting more and more frustrated. As the trip progressed we started knocking a few things on the head. These guys really worked their arses off in the lead up to the fall holiday period. As frustrating as it was on a work trip, the downtime allowed Tuesy and I get a bit of painting done. On the previous trip we worked on removing the floatation in the pigments (where you can see some separation in the pigments on the wall), we removed the blushing (where you get a milky white texture over the paint in high humidity) and with winter approaching in Europe and the USA, making sure our paint worked well in the colder climates. We checked on these again and the boxes were all ticked. This trip we spent time tweaking the chrome and gold formulations. It's vital heading into winter that people can trust and depend on them, so we got that nailed and did some cold weather testing as well. Hopefully that stock will hit Europe around late November or early December. We spent the rest of the time working on a few new things that I can’t comment on for the moment. The improvements should filter through in the coming months and we’ll make everyone well aware of the benefits of these changes. We need to do more testing on them and I’d rather not update you until they’re actually finished. Just keep an eye on the blog for future updates. Before leaving the factory we had a mini banquet and drinking session in the food hall with the employees to celebrate the commencement of the Fall Holiday in October. Everyone was in good spirits toasting with one another. With so many people in such close proximity, the place was loud as fuck, and people got drunk in a hurry. Tues and I rocked back into Shenzhen on the Friday arvo, tired as hell after the few nights of drinking and celebrating the coming of the Fall Holiday Festival. Tiredness aside, we hit up our man Touch to see if he was keen to go painting. We ended up under a bridge just on dark for an hour or so and did some quick cool pieces. In hindsight I wish that mine was a bit more bottom heavy, as that’s what I was going for. We went back to our hotel, showered up, knocked out some work and enjoyed some late night entertainment before crashing for the night - I threw on “Boyz N the Hood” while Tues caught up on the latest breaking bad episodes. The next morning Tues hit me up to go for breakfast, but after having eaten the same thing week in and week out over the course of five years I didn’t feel like it. He went without me and came back all Bates-inspired with some bullshit sketch leaving me a little concerned I was going to get embarrassed on the wall later that day. Lucky for me he toned it down a bit. We’d already burned through all the Ironlak chrome we had earlier in the week, so after brekky we picked up some chrome from a local hardware store and walked down the street for some quick crewies. After that we went and ordered some unhealthy-but-tasty pizza just to get some Western-style flavour into us. We chilled for a few hours and jumped in a cab to meet Touch for a painting session that afternoon. It happened to be our last night in China so it was good to finish painting and on a high-note. The next morning we headed back for Hong Kong to catch our flight home. As they love saying in China “Game Over”.

So the weekend just gone was certainly one of the more eventful weekends I've had in a while. And by eventful I mean NOTHING went to plan. For the 'Ironlak Australia Day' festivities, I had planned to visit Townsville on the Saturday for an event at Cre8ive SK8 – returning to Brisbane on the Sunday to paint a 14-namer wall with the Ironlak Family, staff and friends. Both events had a heavy BBQ, beers and fun in the sun aspect to them, emphasis on SUN. As it turned out, the weather didn't want to give us any sun, instead deciding to first hit Townsville with torrential rain and hectic winds and then continue to share the wet-weather love with us in Brisbane. With the original plans clearly out the window, I scrambled to reorganise things. RUSTE, YESMA and myself went for a quick piece early on the Sunday morning. With the weather getting worse, we opted for an "indoor location". The only catch was the roof of the spot had definitely seen better days and was clanging around in the wind, threatening to fall apart on our heads at any moment. In addition, the mounting rain wasn't deterred by the shambles a roof - leaving us, my camera and the wall completely drenched. Fortunately Ironlak's formulation sticks surprisingly well to wet surfaces due to its water displacement ability. So even the parts of the wall that had water-a-flowing managed to accept the paint with minimal bleeding. I also got to use the latest formulation of some of our greens and was excited that the coverage was restored and better than ever. After that we spent the afternoon with the Ironlak Fam and friends for a BBQ on my balcony. The weather got a little crazier but couldn't deter us from the good times. The only dampener was when the power went out in the early evening (for 3 days!), forcing us to continue our party under the 'romantic' setting of candlelight. Due to the large number of flicks getting sent in, we've only just gotten around to sorting though all of the Ironlak Australia Day competition goodness! Well done to everybody who went out and got their hands dirty this Australia Day, we were overwhelmed with some of the quality coming through (despite some horrible weather in some parts of the country) and we've even had to bend the competition results. The decision for the top two spots was incredibly hard but after a great deal of mulling over, we've decided that the 50 can prize packs have to go to: STIKER and PURES. DVATE and GENT. Ironlak and Published ArtHouse presents Linz, Reals, Sofles, Meks, Sauce, Tues, Vans the Omega & Treas in ‘Veil of Anonymity’. The title ‘Veil of Anonymity’ is somewhat ambiguous in itself. While graffiti artists seek to be seen and appreciated, there is often a disconnection between a writer's nom de plume and their personal self. Masking their identity in an effort to maintain a ‘Veil of Anonymity’ from prying eyes. In a national first, the Australian Ironlak Family have come together to exhibit new works at Published ArtHouse - 11 Canon St in Adelaide for what will no doubt be a truly incredible showcase of talent.
