The Americas Tour 2011 | PALMS, TUES and Ironlak BBQ Burners – Part 2.

When last I left you, the grizzled, chicken-wing munching TUES and his little sidekick PALMS, were waving goodbye to LA in the early hours of a morn, and anticipating getting off the plane at the annual International Writers Convention (otherwise known as Art Basel).

Flying in over ocean, beach and palm trees, started to give a little buzz, and by the time we got scooped up from the airport by big ENUE and were riding thru Miami, we were well and truly hyped for the event.

For those who have never had the opportunity to visit this annual event, or have yet to become cynical and jaded, Art Basel is an eye opening, inspiring, humbling and downright fucking cool experience. Entire blocks of a suburban neighbourhood are turned into canvasses and eager writers from around the world roll into town to paint, exhibit, catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

Ironlak had an exceptional presence that you would have all seen by now with a massive, killer wall dominated by a crazy SOFLES character and burner pieces from the Family.  Without humming the nuts too hard, to see SOFLES paint on this scale is always incredible. The sheer volume of paint he manages to apply to the wall in the time frame is impressive enough, then you look at it conceptually and the level of detail and its downright unfathomable. He is in a very rare stratosphere for sure.

Getting a bunch of the Ironlak fam together in any one place and time is always an great time, and this was no exception, but there was jaw dropping art happening around every corner, and travelling around watching it go down is one of the best aspects of the whole event.

A lot of the Ironlak related stuff has been shown on this blog previously, so I thought I would show some of the other flicks I was impressed by.

A word of advice if you plan to attend: If you want to paint a half decent legal spot, have your spot lined up well in advance. Most decent spots are long booked, and the ones that are free get snapped up real quick.

If, like us, you had a 3 namer spot promised to you by the ‘curator’ but he never turns up or lets you know where you can paint, you may find yourself frustrated and when that happens, you may find yourself in the dark at night with GESO and MUCH claiming a spot over the top of some street art.

On our final day in Miami, we met up with our mate Argenis, who splits his time between Miami and Ecaudor, and distributes Ironlak in his home country.

He was kind enough to take us out near his family home, to the Everglades for a airboat ride.

This was the kind of experience you just dont get elsewhere. Picture the most cliched, alligator swamp boat driving character you have ever seen on TV, and thought would be too over the top to be real….nah, they be real, and having one tell you bout gator tail soup and crack inbred jokes is a hell of an experience.

Look closely, you will see the gator chilling there.

Big TUESY kissed this little fella good bye, and we bailed straight to the airport with a buzz ready for the adventures that Chile would bring the next day…..

Lots more to come…

IRONLAK BBQ BURNERS – Florianópolis, Brasil – December, 2011.

As part of their tour of the Americas last year, TUES and PALMS journeyed to Ironlak BBQ Burners in Florianópolis to join more than 30 writers hailing from cities all over Brazil.

Dedo Sujo did an amazing job organizing a huge sharehouse/mansion for all the writers and a massive 3 day wall in the heart of the beautiful island city.

When the writers weren’t painting, they had the awesome opportunity to build, swap sketches, play pool and generally enjoy hanging out. This unprecedented level of planning led to a great wall and we’re sure all the writers involved had an amazing time and can’t wait for an opportunity to do it again.

It was inspiring to see so many writers who had never met from different cities, styles and backgrounds come together with such a friendly, positive vibe. Massive respect to all involved:

San, Kico, Diant, Muk, Fhero, Palms, End, Jotape, Bigod, Fred, Tim Tchais, Holie, Baycroc, Swk, Asno, Valdi, Vejam, Vespa, Rizo, Wow, Valen, Guspe, Bolacha, Ph, Buyu, Enxame, Lelin, Tues, Bagre, Rz, Wags, Kajaman, Añao and Dake.

A special shout-out must go to local musicians Dom Casamata for supplying the music for this video.

The Americas Tour 2011 | PALMS, TUES and Ironlak BBQ Burners – Part 1.

“At the very end of November last year, the big fella TUES and myself boarded a plan in Brisbane to begin a whirlwind trip; in the following 17 days we would visit 10 cities in 5 countries, and do our level best to paint in all of them. The trip wasn’t on a whim. South American writers have been showing a lot of love to Ironlak and we wanted to return the favour, so crazy passport and visa dramas be damned, we were taking our special brand of BBQ Burner love to our amigos in Chile, Brazil and Argentina, and some how managed to wing our way via LA, Miami and NYC.

In the near future the videos and photos of the actual BBQ Burner events will be posted, but like all good trips, many very cool moments also happened outside of the event, and we decided to share them over the course of a couple of blog posts. I’m certainly no photography specialist so please forgive the quality of the iphone pics.

Standing in the ridiculously long immigrations and customs queues in LA after our 14 hour flight, we amused ourselves by discussing whether Sofles and Luke Shirlaw, who had arrived on a previous flight, would be waiting to meet us. After entertaining various possibilities, Tues bet on the likelihood that Luke would be working away on his laptop and Sofles would be asleep. This is what we finally cleared customs to find:

Score one for Big TUES. We picked up the rental, Shirlaw claimed the wheel and boldly ventured out into the LA traffic, first stop to visit the friendly gentlemen at Ironlak Los Angeles, see the store and to stock up on some artistic supplies. By the time we rolled out of the Hollywood Blvd store, we had been in Los Angeles for at least an hour and a half and were yet to paint or drink. Unacceptable behaviour by our standards, so we made a beeline for Venice Beach, where we hoped to get a chance to hit the iconic beach walls with a quick detour to the bottle-O (aka liquor store) to source one of those giant American beers we had heard so much about and a pitstop at the best named intersection in LA, the corner of Palms and Inglewood.

Shortly before sunset we arrived iconic Venice Beach, and managed to talk ourselves into a prime spot. Wasting no time, SOFLES, TUES and myself got down to business, albeit in bare feet and with pretty girls wandering past in on the sand. We finished just as it began to get dark and got to enjoy watching the sun set over the ocean on our first night in the City of Angels.

The next day good friends of Ironlak DABS & MYLA had laced us with a spot in Hollywood. We invited along LA’s own KOPYE and were joined by fellow Aussie adventurers DVATE and ASKM.

While we painted the spot, right off Hollywood Blvd, we were graced with semi-humorous commentary by the local homeless drunk Red, who’s alley we were painting in. KOPYE laced one of his trademark ill characters to compliment our pieces.

Pieces finished, a feed was high on the agenda and TUES has a thing for wings. We had already samples Popeye’s, and the big guys favourite Wingstop was closed, so it was decided we should try the wings at another American institution, Hooters.

With a gut full of Chicken ‘n’ Beer (whatup Luda!) we rolled back to the hotel with two pieces in two days and started making plans for the next days flight to Miami and Art Basel.

Stay tuned….!” -DirtyHarry.
