Red Bull Curates Home. The video.

In August Sofles, Vans the Omega, Anthony Lister and Shida spent five days locked inside iconic Sydney nightclub ‘HOME’ for Red Bull Curates. The four artists actually lived on site for the week, had access to a gang of Ironlak and free reign to create artwork throughout the venue.

Red Bull Curates Home. The photos.

Last month I headed to Sydney to work on a project with Red Bull at the iconic nightclub ‘HOME’.

‘Home’ has been a landmark on Sydney’s Darling Harbour for 15 or so years and would have to be one of the biggest nightclubs in Australia. As it happens over years of use (and abuse), the inside was looking a little tired and needed a lick of paint to bring it back to life.

The idea was pretty simple; lock four artists inside the club for five days, have them live, sleep, eat, drink etc etc on site and have them make artwork directly on the walls. So, with Red Bull’s help I kidnapped Sofles, Vans the Omega, Anthony Lister and Shida and set them loose inside the venue.

Upon arrival at our new ‘Home’ (bad pun intended), we didn’t quite know what to expect. The Red Bull gang had done a pretty smoking job of setting up a lounge room area in the middle of the dancefloor, directly under a massive fuck-off chandelier. Our bedroom was inside another bar and was complete with clothes racks, bedtime snacks and little dinosaurs and racing cars on the blankets. We got the formalities out of the way and the guys got straight to work.

Needless to say, this was the most time any of us had ever spent sober in a nightclub. Surprisingly it was still fun, just a different kind of paint-induced fun.

After five days of solid painting, Home was transformed into a new venue, and not just physically; a number of the staff were commenting on how they had felt the energy change as the week progressed.

The whole week was amazing and I’m very grateful to Shaun and Christiaan from Red Bull for inviting us to participate in the project. Special thanks must go to Sophie, Susanah and the rest of the gang from Home for all their hospitality.

Here are some photographs. Stay tuned, over the next few days we’ll reveal the video and show a bunch of the finished artwork.
